Newcastle College Campus: District Heating Network and Plantroom Design
Greentropy was appointed, to deliver detailed plantroom and buried heat network design. Bring Energy is the energy services company (ESCO) for the project, which forms part of the campus’s wider energy infrastructure.
The scope covers seven campus buildings connected by an extensive buried heating network. It brings together the external distribution pipework and individual building substations, providing a coordinated design package to support installation across the site.
Buried Heat Network
The buried network serves the Sports Centre, Rye Hill House, Sixth Form College, Parsons Building, Mandela Building, Newcastle Lifestyle Academy and Newcastle Performance Academy.
The design establishes the network route which is over 1000m long, pipework arrangements and installation details, with different pipe sizes selected to suit the requirements of each connection. Particular attention was given to coordinating the external network with the building entry points and internal plantroom layouts.
This coordination provides a clear connection between the campus-wide heat distribution network and the equipment serving each building.

Plantroom and Substation Design
Each plantroom was developed using 3D modelling and engineering coordination, bringing together equipment positions, pipework routes and connection arrangements. The layouts were tailored to the available space and the heating and hot water requirements of each building, with consideration given to installation, equipment access and future maintenance.
