Pudding Mill Lane – District Heating Substation

ESCO: Bring Energy

Location: London

Greentropy provided the detailed mechanical design for the Pudding Mill Lane district heating substation, working with main contractor for Bring Energy.

The project centered on a plate heat exchanger substation designed to transfer heat from the primary district heating network to the building’s secondary heating system. The client’s schematic requirements formed the basis for a coordinated plant room design, bringing together heat transfer equipment, pipework, controls and associated components.

Plant Room and Substation Design

The design developed the schematic concept into a detailed 3D arrangement, with equipment positions and pipework routes coordinated to make effective use of the available plant room space.

The packaged substation incorporated a plate heat exchanger, filtration, heat metering, control instrumentation and isolation valves. Access for installation, servicing and component replacement was considered throughout the layout development, supporting the practical operation and maintenance of the substation.

Pipework routes and supports were coordinated with the equipment arrangement to provide a clear, buildable design that met the client’s district heating requirements.

3D Modelling and Manufacturing Details

The coordinated 3D model provided a clear view of the proposed substation and its connections, allowing equipment positions, valve access and pipework arrangements to be reviewed before manufacturing and installation.

Overall assembly drawings, fabrication details and a Bill of Materials translated the design into the information needed to manufacture and install the substation.

Scope of Work

Greentropy’s design package included:

  • Plantroom layout and spatial coordination
  • Detailed district heating substation design
  • Plate heat exchanger integration
  • 3D modelling and overall assembly drawings
  • Pipework routing and support design
  • Valve and instrumentation coordination
  • Manufacturing and fabrication drawings
  • Bill of Materials

The completed design package supported a compact and accessible substation arrangement, developed around the building’s heating requirements and the available plant room space. Coordination with Bring Energy aligned the technical design with manufacturing, installation and ongoing maintenance needs.
